What Shapes Your Community? Leadership, Connection, and Reaching Beyond Borders

There was a time when our communities were mostly shaped by geography.

The people we worked with.
The schools we attended.
The churches, organizations, and neighborhoods we were part of.
The conferences we could physically travel to.
The rooms we were invited into.

Those spaces still matter. Deeply.

But today, community is being shaped in new ways.

Through podcast conversations.
Virtual events.
Online networking spaces.
Digital communities.
Shared messages.
Unexpected introductions.
And conversations with people we may never have met if we were waiting to be in the same physical room.

Lately, I have been reminded of just how powerful that can be.

My recent podcast guest, Kristina Heagh-Avritt, joined me from Oregon. This past week, I had the opportunity to speak with Aura E. Martinez’s Inner Globetrotters community, which is based out of New York. I am preparing to participate as a featured podcaster at Podapalooza, a virtual event that brings together podcast hosts and guests from all over the world.

And through recent virtual networking opportunities, I have connected with people from Australia, Spain, the Netherlands, the UK, Ireland, Canada, Argentina, Belize, and all across the United States.

That still amazes me.

Not because technology exists. We all know that.

But because when used with intention, technology does more than connect screens. It connects stories, ideas, opportunities, cultures, perspectives, and people.

What shapes your community?

Is it only the people closest to you?

Is it only the people who already know what you do?

Is it only the people in your current industry, organization, town, or circle?

Or are you creating space for new conversations, new perspectives, and new opportunities to find you?

Leadership grows when our conversations grow.

Not because we need to chase every room, platform, or invitation, but because meaningful connection often begins when we step beyond what is familiar.

Sometimes that looks like joining a virtual networking room.

Sometimes it looks like being a guest on a podcast.

Sometimes it looks like hosting someone else’s story.

Sometimes it looks like showing up in a group where people are thinking differently, living differently, or leading in a different part of the world.

And sometimes, one conversation opens a door you did not even know was there.

Reaching Beyond the Familiar

The beautiful thing about digital connection is that it gives us the ability to reach beyond the familiar.

A podcast episode can reach someone in a state you have never visited.

A short YouTube clip can introduce your message to someone in another country.

A virtual event can place you in conversation with people who are looking for exactly what you offer.

A networking call can become a collaboration, a referral, a friendship, or a new opportunity to serve.

But reach is not only about visibility.

It is about responsibility.

The farther our voices travel, the more intentional we need to be with how we use them.

What are we communicating?
What are we modeling?
What kind of culture are we creating in the spaces we enter?
How are we making people feel seen, heard, valued, and supported?

Because whether we are leading in person or online, culture is still being created.

It is created in the way we introduce ourselves.
It is created in the way we listen.
It is created in the way we follow up.
It is created in the way we honor someone else’s story.
It is created in the way we show up with clarity, consistency, and care.

Connection Is More Than Contact

One of the lessons I keep learning is that connection is more than contact.

We can collect names, contacts, followers, and links without ever truly creating connection.

True connection requires presence.

It requires curiosity.

It requires listening with the desire to understand, not just waiting for our turn to speak.

It requires seeing people as more than potential clients, collaborators, or contacts. It requires seeing them as humans with stories, experiences, wisdom, and dreams.

That is where meaningful community begins.

And that is also where leadership begins.

Because leadership is not only about how many people we reach. It is about how people experience us when they are within our reach.

Recent Conversations and Opportunities

This week, I am grateful to share a few recent conversations and opportunities that reflect this season of connection.

My recent podcast conversation with Christina Heagh-Avritt reminded me again of the power of story, purpose, and showing up with intention.

I also had the opportunity to speak with Aura E. Martinez inside her Inner Globetrotter community. I am sharing a short clip from that conversation, and I would love for you to check out more clips on my YouTube page.

I am also excited to be one of the featured podcasters interviewing VIP attendees at Podapalooza on June 10, 2026. If you have ever wanted someone to hand you a mic and say, “Let’s record,” this is a wonderful opportunity to connect with podcast hosts from all over and share your message.

As a VIP attendee, you can be interviewed on up to five podcasts, meet podcast hosts who are actively looking for guests, learn how to land more interviews, and connect with others in a fun virtual event experience.

How Far Are You Reaching?

Not in a way that feels forced or exhausting.

Not in a way that asks you to be everywhere all at once.

But in a way that invites you to consider whether your community has room to grow.

Who could you learn from outside your current circle?

What virtual room could you step into?

What conversation have you been avoiding because it feels unfamiliar?

What message do you carry that someone in another city, state, or country may need to hear?

We are living in a time when connection can cross borders in seconds.

But meaningful connection still requires intention.

Show up with purpose.
Listen with care.
Communicate with clarity.
Lead with humanity.

Because your community may be much bigger than you realize.

And your next meaningful connection may be one conversation away.

With gratitude,
