Threads of Belonging: How Authentic Leadership Creates Lasting Connection in Higher Education

After returning from the Arizona Women in Higher Education Conference, I’ve been reflecting deeply on the powerful theme that carried through every conversation, session, and shared experience: “Threads of Belonging.” This beautiful metaphor reminded us that in leadership, especially in higher education, we’re not just managing programs or policies—we’re weaving people, purpose, and passion together to create something lasting.

As women in educational leadership, our impact is amplified not by striving to fit a mold, but by showing up as our authentic selves, engaging in meaningful communication, and building genuine connection.

These are the threads that create a culture of belonging—not just for our students and teams, but for ourselves.

Here are five takeaways to help you lead with strength, heart, and connection:

1. Lead with Authenticity – Your Story Is Your Strength

Authenticity isn’t a buzzword—it’s a leadership superpower. When you lead from a place of self-awareness and alignment with your values, you invite others to do the same. Vulnerability opens the door to trust, and trust builds belonging.

Tip: Share your journey—your challenges, lessons, and triumphs—with those you lead. Transparency inspires others to show up fully, too.

2. Create Psychological Safety Through Communication

Belonging starts with feeling heard. As leaders, we must listen with empathy, speak with clarity, and encourage open dialogue. When people feel safe to speak up without fear of judgment or retaliation, they engage more meaningfully.

Tip: Practice “reflective listening” in meetings. Repeat back what you hear to ensure understanding and to validate the speaker. This simple habit transforms how people experience being heard.

3. Build Bridges, Not Silos

Leadership is not a solo act—it’s a community. True connection happens when we step out of our offices and into collaborative spaces. Whether it’s co-creating initiatives, mentoring across departments, or supporting underrepresented voices, connection cultivates inclusion.

Tip: Schedule intentional “connection time” into your month—host coffee chats, cross-team meetups, or mentoring moments that nurture real relationships.

4. Cultivate a Culture of Appreciation

Feeling seen and valued is at the heart of belonging. A kind word, a thank-you note, or a public shout-out can have lasting impact on morale and motivation.

Tip: Make it a habit to recognize contributions regularly. A small act of acknowledgment might be the encouragement someone needs to keep going.

5. Be Courageously Consistent

Belonging is not a one-time event—it’s a daily practice. Show up consistently with integrity, compassion, and purpose. Even when it’s hard. Even when it’s not reciprocated. Over time, your consistency becomes the thread others can rely on.

Tip: Anchor your leadership in a core mantra. Something like: “I lead to serve, support, and spark growth.” Let it guide your daily decisions and presence.

As we return to our campuses and organizations, let’s carry these threads of belonging with us—not just as a memory from the conference, but as a leadership commitment. Let’s continue to weave spaceswhere every student, staff member, and colleague feels seen, heard, and valued.

Because leadership isn’t about standing out—it’s about drawing others in.
