Reset and Refuel: How One Leader Reclaimed Her Energy and Elevated Her Impact

Leadership isn’t just about moving projects forward—it’s about moving yourself forward with intention. Over the past few months, I’ve seen how the pace of leadership can wear even the strongest leaders down. One of my recent mentorship clients, Carrie, reminded me just how powerful it is when a leader takes time to pause and refuel.

The Moment of Pause

When Carrie and I began working together, she was juggling every demand—campus responsibilities, community involvement, and the constant pull to show up for everyone else. Her calendar was full, but her energy was fading.

During one of our sessions, I invited her to experiment with the Reset & Refuel Mini Guide, a framework built around five simple but strategic actions for self-leadership. Within a few weeks, the shift was visible.

🧘‍♀️ 1. Pause for Presence

We started small. She scheduled a five-minute presence break each morning—no phone, no meetings, no multitasking. Just breathing, noticing, and being.

Presence unlocks clarity. Leadership happens in the here and now. Carrie told me later, “That five-minute pause feels like my reset button—it changes how I walk into every conversation.”

🛡 2. Protect Your Energy Boundaries

Next, she began defining her non-negotiable recharge times—lunch without emails, Friday evenings off limits to work, and one Sunday a month dedicated to personal renewal.

Boundaries safeguard our energy and long-term impact. Once Carrie protected her margins, her creativity returned. She was no longer reacting; she was leading with clarity and calm.

🏃‍♀️ 3. Move Your Body with Intention

Leadership lives in both the mind and the body. Carrie committed to ten minutes of mindful movement each day, sometimes yoga, sometimes a walk around campus.

Physical energy fuels leadership stamina and creativity. Within two weeks, she said she felt “lighter—mentally and physically.” Those short bursts of movement became her anchor before major decisions or presentations.

☀️ 4. Nourish with Positive Input

Carrie also curated positive mental input into her day—listening to uplifting podcasts on her commute, replacing late-night scrolling with gratitude journaling, and engaging with content that fueled her growth instead of her anxiety.

Positive input shapes leadership output. The stories she consumed began to mirror the hope she wanted to model for her team.

🌙 5. Reflect & Reset Nightly

Finally, we incorporated a nightly reflection ritual:

  • What energized me today?

  • What drained me?

  • What do I want to carry forward tomorrow?

These three questions changed everything. They became the quiet bridge between one day and the next—a synthesis of awareness and action that deepened her resilience.

🔄 The Transformation

After six weeks of practicing the guide, Carrie wasn’t just managing her workload—she was modeling sustainable leadership for her team. Her staff began adopting the same reflection prompts, and the atmosphere of her department shifted from exhaustion to engagement.

She told me, “I thought I needed more hours in the day. What I really needed was a system that reminded me to breathe.”

That’s the power of Reset & Refuel—it transforms burnout into balance and busy into intentional.

💬 Reflection for You

Ask yourself:

  • What leadership habit do I need to reset this season?

  • What leadership strength do I want to refuel and amplify?

Remember: Self-care is not selfish; it’s strategic. Thriving leaders create thriving teams.
