The Pattern I Kept Seeing

I'm Dr. Stephanie Duguid, a leadership cultural strategist, keynote speaker, and bestselling author of Exponentially Elevate Your Leadership Impact. With over 30 years of experience as a teacher, athletic trainer, and administrator across K-12 and higher education, I've spent my career helping leaders build cultures of trust, communication, and authentic connection, not by accident, but on purpose.

For years, organizations brought me in to speak on communication and conflict resolution with grace. Almost always because turnover, burnout, or breakdowns on their team had already become impossible to ignore. Every time, I saw the same pattern: leaders had invested in policies and procedures, but not in the people carrying them out. Communication was always the first thing to erode — and trust, retention, and morale followed close behind.

The numbers back up what I kept seeing in the room:

  • Teams lose nearly a full workday a week — 7.47 hours — to poor communication, costing roughly $12,506 per employee, per year. (Grammarly/Harris Poll, State of Business Communication, 2025)

  • 75% of voluntary employee departures are preventable — most of what gets written off as "just turnover" was visible long before the resignation letter. (Work Institute, 2025 Retention Report)

The Culture Pulse Check™ grew out of that pattern: a simple, honest way to see what's actually happening — communication, clarity, consistency, and connection — before it turns into a resignation letter, a burnout crisis, or another policy nobody reads.

The Four C's of a Healthy Culture

Every team's culture comes down to four things. When these four are strong, team members trust their leaders, understand their work, and stay. When even one erodes, everything else eventually follows.

COMMUNICATION

How information moves — up, down, and across your team. Team members get what they need, when they need it, and understand the "why" behind decisions, not just the "what."

CLARITY

Whether the team members understand what's expected of them and why. Roles, priorities, and goals are well-defined, so effort lands where it matters.

CONSISTENCY

Whether today's guidance still holds true next week. Leaders follow through, and standards apply the same way to the entire team.

CONNECTION

The trust, safety, and sense of belonging that hold a team together. Colleagues feel genuinely supported, not just managed.

For organizations, The Culture Pulse Check™ goes beyond the individual self-assessment by looking at how supported your team feels in their role, their day-to-day productivity, and their overall well-being, since that's often where the first signs of a strained culture show up.
