Build Your Tribe: Navigating Uncertainty with Support and Grace

When speaking to Nora Miller, President of Mississippi University for Women, on my "Empowering Women in Educational Leadership" October 25th episode, she said that in a leadership position, it can be very lonely.  She recommends that you “Build Your Tribe” of key individuals you can turn to for advice and guidance.

In life, we often find ourselves facing challenges and uncertainties that leave us feeling overwhelmed and unsure of how to proceed. While having a reliable network of friends and colleagues is valuable, there's something equally important, building your tribe. This tribe is made up of go-to people who exist outside your immediate network but can offer fresh perspectives, guidance, and support when you need it most. In this blog, we'll explore the significance of having such a tribe and how it can help you navigate uncharted waters with grace.

Diverse Perspectives for Uncharted Waters

Your immediate network typically consists of people you interact with regularly—colleagues, friends, and family. While they provide essential support and insights, they may share similar perspectives and experiences. In contrast, your tribe comprises individuals from various backgrounds, locations, and walks of life. This diversity is a treasure trove of fresh viewpoints and ideas.

1. Broadened Horizons: When you face a challenge or dilemma, your tribe members can offer perspectives that you might never have considered. Their unique backgrounds and experiences bring fresh ideas to the table, helping you see new possibilities and solutions.

2. Cross-Cultural Wisdom: Having tribe members from different parts of the world can be particularly enriching. They can provide cultural insights and approaches that can be invaluable when dealing with global challenges or expanding your horizons.

3. Objective Feedback: Your tribe members are often not directly affected by your day-to-day life or work. This objectivity allows them to provide honest, unbiased feedback, which can be difficult to obtain from those in your immediate circle.

Navigating Uncertainty with Support

Uncertainty is a part of life, and it's during these times that your tribe becomes especially invaluable. Here's how your tribe can provide the support you need:

1. A Safe Space to Vent: Sometimes, you need a space to express your frustrations and concerns without judgment. Your tribe can serve as that safe haven where you can vent and gain emotional release.

2. Guidance and Mentorship: Tribe members who have faced similar challenges or have more experience in certain areas can offer guidance and mentorship. They can share their own stories, mistakes, and lessons learned to help you navigate similar situations.

3. Motivation and Encouragement: When you're feeling stuck or demotivated, your tribe can provide the encouragement and motivation you need to keep moving forward. They can remind you of your strengths and accomplishments, boosting your confidence.

Building Your Tribe

Building your tribe requires time and effort, but the rewards are immeasurable. Here's how you can start:

1. Networking Events: Attend conferences, seminars, or online events related to your field or interests. These gatherings are excellent opportunities to connect with like-minded individuals.

2. Online Communities: Join online forums, social media groups, or professional networks related to your industry or passions. Engage in discussions and form connections with those who resonate with you.

3. Mentorship Programs: Seek out mentorship programs or platforms that connect mentors and mentees. These relationships often evolve into long-lasting connections.

4. Volunteer and Social Causes: Get involved in volunteer work or social causes you're passionate about. You'll meet people who share your values and interests.
